Founded in the UK in 1889, the music examinations have a history of over 120 years. It is conducted in over 90 countries worldwide and fairly assesses overall musical ability. It is based on the idea that "everyone can enjoy music through examinations", and to inspire developing musicians. Examinations are available from Grade 1 to 8. They cover performance, musical skills and theory, and are open to any age and from beginners to advanced students. There are also performance opportunities for those with outstanding results.
Before taking Practical Grade 6, 7 or 8, students must pass Grade 5 in Music Theory. As such, learning music theory from an early stage will help them develop their overall ability. Learning with a goal in mind will speed up your progress and give you a sense of achievement.
ABRSM Piano

ABRSM preparation piano lessons are available for Grades 1-8.
There are two types of examinations: Practical Grades (face-to-face) and Performance Grades (a video recording).
The Practical Grades focus on all-round musical skills including performance (three pieces and supporting tests). Aural tests are also included, and taught within my lessons.
ABRSM Music Theory

ABRSM theory examinations are taught up to Grade 5.
Developing an understanding and knowledge of music theory helps musicians at all levels for their performances. If you're taking a Practical Grade 6, 7 or 8, you must pass Grade 5 or above in Music Theory.
I recommend that you work through Discovering Music Theory in order from Grade 1, but this does not apply to those who already have a lot of knowledge of music theory. You can start with any grade and skip grades if you want to.
